Paris Masters deletes post featuring Alexander Zverev after being flooded with “#IstandwithOlya” in the comments
Alexander Zverev scaled
Alexander Zverev was on a high from his successful runs at Grand Slam events for the first time this year. He reached the Australian Open semi-final and the U.S Open final. In October, the German also picked up 2 titles in Cologne. Now, he has been pulled back down to earth from the cloud 9 that he was on.
Zverev has been dowsed in controversy this past week. Firstly, the World No.7 made the headlines because his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea announced that she was pregnant with their child, but won’t share custody with Sascha at any cost. Later, the U.S Open finalist insisted that he was ready to “live up to his responsibility as a father.”
While this stands to be a personal matter that does not require anyone else’s opinion besides the concerned parties, abuse allegations can’t be brushed aside no matter the level of influence the alleged abuser has.
Olya Sharypova’s allegations against Alexander Zverev
Zverev has denied allegations made by another ex-girlfriend of his who has claimed that he tried to strangle her and hit her head against a wall before the commencement of US Open in 2019.
Olya Sharypova dated Alexander for several years before their split last year. She has recently claimed that she was a victim of domestic abuse in an instagram post.
The Russian photographer did not name Zverev specifically at first. After that, during her interview with Championat, she confirmed that Alexander was the subject of her post.
She detailed the abuse she suffered. Sharypova claimed that Zverev tried to strangle her with a pillow and she was left fearing for her life.
Zverev called these accusations “unfounded” and “simply not true” in a statement posted on Twitter. To this, Olya replied that “my story has just started.” She also questioned him for his response when, according to her, both of them knew that the allegations were true. Soon after, the movement #IstandwithOlya started trending.

The scrutiny Paris Masters faced for making a post with Zverev in it
Alexander is slated to compete in Paris Masters from tomorrow. He is set to take part in both the singles and the doubles category.
The social media account of the tournament received backlash as they made a post with Alexander in it. The comments were flooded by #IstandwithOlya as people tried to express their stand on the matter.
This put the tournament’s morals into question, as their post seemed to normalise the extremely grave situation that domestic abuse is.
The comments represented the stand of the public after listening to Olya’s harrowing accounts of the abuse she’s suffered. The handlers of the Paris Masters account ultimately deleted the post because only one emotion was expressed in the comments, that of solidarity with Olya.
