Sterling Mahomes will finally get to spend time with her grandfather, Patrick Mahomes Sr., after a long while. The retired MLB pitcher and the father of three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes has received clearance from a Texas court to fly to Kansas City.

Mahomes Sr. has been on probation since 2024 following a guilty plea for a third DWI charge. The San Francisco Post reports that the police stopped the 55-year-old for violating a traffic signal. Upon investigating, traces of intoxication were discovered along with an expired driver’s license.

The police issued a ticket for the traffic violation to Mahomes Sr., and he was required to appear in court in July. In August, he pleaded guilty in the Smith County court in Tyler, Texas. The court set a five-year probation and one year of “intense supervision” as punishment. The court also sentenced him to 10 days of jail time and suspended his license.

In February 2026, Mahomes Sr. was arrested for violating a term of his probation by drinking alcohol.

According to an article in the Post, a judge in Texas has granted permission to Mahomes Sr. to attend his granddaughter Sterling’s dance recital. He will be permitted to be in Missouri from June 5 to June 7 for the special occasion. However, he must report to his probation officer before flying to KC.

What did Patrick Mahomes say about his dad’s DWI arrest?

The Chiefs lost the final against the Eagles that year. Mahomes addressed the arrest in the ESPN docuseries “The Kingdom.”

I think just knowing that it hurt me. Woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things.

Patrick Mahomes said

Pat Mahomes makes an appearance on the show as well, reflecting on his actions and how they affected his son and family members.

It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life. I called him right after … I said, ‘I’m sorry.’

Mahomes later admitted that he was surprised to hear that his dad willingly sat in front of the camera and talked about the incident.

Patrick Mahomes nearly did not suit up for the Kansas City Chiefs

Over the years, plenty of coaches and managers have claimed that they were very close to selecting Mahomes in the 2017 draft or expressed disappointment for passing on to draft someone else. The latest name to enter that catalogue is former Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim.

Keim, who left the Cardinals in 2022, recently opened up that he was eyeing the Texas Tech alum at 13th overall before the Chiefs moved up from the 27th to the 10th overall pick to draft Mahomes.

I regret the fact that I didn’t follow through with what I told the owner I would do, which is trade up to get Patrick Mahomes. But I will say this, he was one of my favorite players I ever scouted, and to this day, it still haunts me that we do not have Patrick Mahomes as our quarterback. It’s all on me, I can promise you that. Sorry to all of the Arizona Cardinals fans, I apologize. I really screwed that up.

Keim said

Mahomes is 2-0 against the Cardinals in his NFL career. He has recorded a passer rating of 138.2 with 609 yards and 7 touchdowns.
