Rashee Rice’s season is in jeopardy after the Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers picked up an early injury while playing against the Los Angeles Chargers. Rice hurt himself while trying to save a pick-6 from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The game was only a little over 8 minutes old on Sunday at SoFi Stadium when Mahomes attempted a pass on 1st & 10. His intended target was tight end Travis Kelce, but the second-year wideout had Chargers defenders surrounding him like bees to honey.

Mahomes uncharacteristically overthrew the ball that sailed over Kelce’s head. Chargers Kristian Fulton intercepted the pass and then sidestepped Rice to run across the midway mark of the turf.

Fulton received support from his Chargers teammates as they blocked the Chiefs’ bodies that tried to stop his run. Eventually, it was Mahomes who stood between the cornerback and more yards.

The 3x Super Bowl winner lunged in but missed Fulton completely. Instead, Patrick Mahomes went shoulder first into Rice’s right leg, who had trailed Fulton ever since the interception.

Rashee Rice stayed down flat on the ground. After the medical team examined him, they decided it was best to take the 24-year-old off. The CBS cameras showed Rice burying his face into his palms as he was being carted away for further evaluation.

Did Rashee Rice return to the game?

The Chiefs trailed the Chargers 10-0 when Rice got hurt. After that, Patrick Mahomes orchestrated a brilliant drive four minutes before the halftime break.

Mahomes found rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who outran Fulton to score a 54-yard touchdown, reducing the gap to just 3 points. The Chiefs squandered the following two-point conversion.

They had another great opportunity to take the lead with the final few seconds left. Harrison Butker walked onto the field with the task of scoring a field goal from 65 yards, but the highest-paid NFL kicker failed to convert it.

As the referee blew the half-time whistle, CBS’ Tracy Wolfson found Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and asked him about the severity of Rashee Rice’s injury.

No! But it’s not good.

Andy Reid said on Rashee Rice’s injury

The Chiefs announced that Rice was unquestionably out for the rest of the game. According to renowned physician Jesse Morse’s initial analysis, Rice possibly suffered a hyperextension. It can lead to mild sprains of the meniscus to 1+ ligaments of MCL, ACL, and PCL.

Morse deduced that this is the best-case scenario and it will take Rice 1-2 weeks to recover. However, the worst is an ACL tear, which might end his campaign.

Only after a detailed check-up can reveal the consequences of Mahomes’ challenge on Rice. In his first three games of the 2024 season, Rice recorded 24 catches for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns.
