A year ago, Jerry Jones was in a dilemma about how much he could pay Micah Parsons. A short while later, he decided not to and traded away his best pass rusher to the Green Bay Packers.

There was a time when the owner-cum-GM wanted to make his former star the highest-paid defensive player in the league. However, negotiations reached an impasse, and Jones probably did not want to deal with the mess any longer.

Instead, he pivoted to set another plan in motion that involved a complete rebuild of the Cowboys’ defense. Parsons was gone; in came Quinnen Williams and a plethora of other players.

So far, the billionaire was receiving nothing but praise for how he managed to build this new unit based on the assets he received in the Parsons trade. Now, one analyst believes it may have been all for nothing.

Last year, not paying Parsons was a really interesting decision for an 82-year-old man to say, ‘You know what, we’re gonna let this man walk out of our building and we’re gonna be okay.’ And it backfired at first; that defense was horrendous.

The former Good Morning Football analyst went on to say that, at the time, Jerry Jones rightfully received a lot of backlash. Even to this date, the Cowboys’ struggles rushing the passer are evident, and Micah Parsons could have been the answer to it.

Now that Quinnen Williams received a big extension, Peter Schrager wonders whether Jones believed paying the defensive tackle was more important than paying one of the best pass rushers in the league.

Peter Schrager agrees Jerry Jones’ new defense makes sense

After first criticizing Jerry Jones for not paying Micah Parsons, Peter Schrager continued his analogy while on First Take to explain how his view about the Cowboys’ defense has changed.

As they put these pieces together- Clark, and Gary, and Downs, and Quinnen, Malachi Lawrence- I’m starting to see it come together.

It seems that the analyst has come around to the idea that the most valuable team in the National Football League is better off without Parsons. Instead, his departure has allowed Jones to build a complete unit.

Schrager, just like most analysts and fans, is optimistic that this new unit, and a potential final piece. Along with their new coach, the analyst believes the tide is going to turn. Last season, the defense was blamed for the Cowboys’ inability to reach the playoffs.

This time, this retooled squad might help Jerry Jones in his goal to win the most Super Bowls before he leaves the world. His ambition might be too great to be completed in this lifetime, but at least he has done his part to build a team that can win it all.

Jerry Jones hands Quinnen Williams massive extension

Micah Parsons was about to enter the final year of his rookie contract when he wanted his extension. At that advanced stage, players have a lot of negotiation power. Maybe that is why the energy magnate decided not to delay when it came to another star player.

The Cowboys and star DL Quinnen Williams have agreed to terms on a 3-year, $105.9M extension to make him one of the highest-paid DLs.

Ian Rapoport revealed on X

This extension was done despite Quinnen Williams having two years left on his existing contract. He still gets the largest third contract in NFL history for a D-lineman.

But at the same time, Jerry Jones doing it a year early indicates that he did not want the total value to balloon to a point where it becomes too expensive for the team’s future.
