As the MLB trade deadline inches closer, speculation regarding the future of Tarik Skubal has continued to grow. On Tuesday, reports from Jon Morosi expressed that the Philadelphia Phillies are one of the teams that have scouted the pitcher.

Skubal is currently in the final year of his contract with the Tigers. If he does not sign an extension and rejects the qualifying offer, he will become a free agent.

The southpaw is expected to land a deal around $400 million in free agency. With the Tigers at 51-57 for the season, they are 3.5 games behind the final American League Wild Card spot.

Due to this, there are several rumors that the AL Central team could trade their ace pitcher at the trade deadline instead of losing him for free. Some of the big-market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers have been linked with him.

The Phillies are also reported to be in these trade talks. As per insider Jon Morosi, the NL East side is among several teams that scouted Skubal during his start last weekend against the Kansas City Royals.

At the moment, the Phillies’ rotation consists of Zach Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo and Aaron Nola. If they are able to land Skubal, they could pair him with Wheeler and Sanchez at the top of the pitching rotation.

For the Phillies, the 2026 season so far has been a topsy-turvy one. After a poor start, they were able to turn things around under Don Mattingly and finished the first half with a 54-43 record.

The start of the 2nd half, however, has not been good for them. In 11 games, they are 3-8 and have lost 6 of their last 7, leaving them with a 57-51 record.

Tarik Skubal is undoubtedly one of the best pitchers of this generation. So if there is a chance to bring him through a trade, every big team wants a piece of it. The Philadelphia Phillies are reported to be one of the teams that have been looking at him.

Fans on social media, however, made fun of the Phillies. Many users made jokes about the team scouting Skubal, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.

The 29-year-old is one of the 12 pitchers in history to win this award in back-to-back seasons. So a team scouting him did not make much sense to some fans. One user wrote, “What is there to scout bro?” while having a crack at this report.

Apart from the Dodgers, the New York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Atlanta Braves are all expected to inquire about Skubal. According to Jeff Passan, the executives believe that the Tigers want to trade him and get something in return.

In 15 starts, Skubal has a 7-5 record and has a 2.70 ERA. This comes in a season where he missed a few games and underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
