In Short
  • Matthew Stafford signed a one-year contract extension with the Rams worth up to $60 million.
  • He became the first player in NFL history to surpass $400 million in career earnings.
  • Fans widely praised the Rams for rewarding Stafford, the reigning MVP, with a substantial raise.

Matthew Stafford finally proved his position as the best quarterback in the NFL after his career-best year ended with the league rewarding him with the regular-season MVP award.

In 17 seasons, he has had two seasons in which he threw for more yards. But those two campaigns with the Detroit Lions came when he also attempted the most passes in his career.

During the 2025 season, he attempted fewer than 600 times and yet managed to garner a league-high 4,707 yards. On top of that, he threw a career-high 88 long passes and registered 46 touchdowns, another career high.

With just eight interceptions in 17 games, he managed to finish the year with a career-best 109.2 rating. That, and the tougher schedule compared to the New England Patriots, cemented his status as the better QB over MVP runner-up Drake Maye.

Mind you, all of this came at age 38, and Stafford will be older when Super Bowl LXI comes around. However, that has not stopped the Los Angeles Rams from giving their signal-caller what he deserves.

Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams reached agreement today on a one-year, $55 million extension worth up to $60 million with incentives. Stafford now has two years and up to $105 million remaining on his deal with the Rams.

With this new contract extension, Stafford will continue to be the highest-earning player in NFL history. This new deal helps him become the first in the league to earn over $400 million.

Fans applaud Matthew Stafford for deserved raise

With Aaron Rodgers announcing that the 2026 season will be his last, Matthew Stafford will remain the highest-earning player ever. Among all the high-profile and record-setting contracts announced this offseason, most fans lauded the Rams for giving the one person everyone felt deserved a substantial raise.

They felt that the mild-mannered father of four is, without a doubt, the best, and he needed to be paid like the best. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Sure, Matthew Stafford is not going to surpass Dak Prescott‘s $60 million contract average salary, but the Cowboys restructured the signal-caller’s deal. That way, the Georgia Bulldog will be the highest-paid player in the league in 2026.

Matthew Stafford’s extension means Ty Simpson will stay on the sidelines for at least one more season

Apart from the majority of the fans reacting to the news of Matthew Stafford‘s contract extension on social media, some asked why the Rams invested their 13th overall pick on Ty Simpson.

They felt that had they thought about this extension before, they could have tried to find another receiver to help their starting QB make the most of their investment. But it seems the trade scenarios running throughout the 2026 NFL Draft left the franchise with no choice but to jump early and secure Simpson.

Stafford made it clear that he will play in 2026. But beyond that remains a question mark. If he stays healthy, expect his rookie understudy to be learning from him from the sidelines until he retires.
