The Baltimore Ravens have received disappointing news ahead of their second preseason game. According to TMZ, wide receiver Rashod Bateman could be away from the team after being charged with domestic violence.

Bateman missed a few Ravens training sessions back in June. Turns out, he was in police custody. TMZ discovered the arrest warrant, which revealed that Bateman, 26, allegedly shattered a car window with the mother of his child and his three-month-old child inside. Police found glass shards on the scene. The victim reportedly suffered small lacerations and multiple contusions to their face.

Shortly after, Bateman surrendered to the authorities. Per The Athletic, Bateman has been charged with first-degree criminal damage to property (a felony), battery-family violence (a first-offense misdemeanor), and reckless conduct (a misdemeanor).

Rashod’s lawyer expressed disappointment with how his client’s situation is being sensationalized on social media. A Ravens spokesperson told TMZ that they are aware of the incident.

We are aware of the situation involving Rashod and have been in direct communication with him. We notified the league office and have been cooperating throughout the process. As this is a pending legal matter, we will not have further comment.

The Ravens have a history of handling serious allegations against players like Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Justin Tucker. Bateman becomes the latest name on that list.

Rashod Bateman has not lived up to his college hype

The Ravens drafted Bateman 27th overall in 2021 after three phenomenal years at the Minnesota Golden Gophers, where in 2019 he earned the Big 10’s best receiver award after recording 1219 yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 receptions. Baltimore viewed Bateman as the perfect weapon for quarterback Lamar Jackson. Unfortunately, he has failed to live up to the hype.

Bateman has reached 700 yards just once in his NFL career. Back in 2024, he caught 45 passes for 756 yards and scored 9 touchdowns. He has yet to earn any All-Pro or Pro Bowl selections.

The Ravens signed Bateman to a three-year, $36.75 million extension. He pocketed $20 million when he signed the deal.

Speaking to the media last week, Bateman revealed he is relishing the opportunity to learn from the new Baltimore staff.

I think wherever these coaches and this staff puts me, I think the whole team is bound to have success. There’s a lot of different guys that are capable of doing a lot of things, and we’ve showcased that in Training Camp, and I think that’ll carry on into the season.

Former Boston College standout Zay Flowers has cemented himself as the undisputed number one on the Ravens roster. Flowers logged consecutive 1000 yard seasons to earn a four-year, $140 million contract extension.

With the charges hanging over his head, Bateman risks losing more ground. Rookie third-round pick Ja’Kobi Lane has been making waves at training camp. He also caught 3 passes for 38 yards and scored one touchdown in the Ravens’ preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bateman is expected to miss the second exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings. Baltimore ends their preseason adventure by hosting the Washington Commanders.
