Entering the 2026 NFL season, the Baltimore Ravens are about to start their new era under head coach Jesse Minter. That also means that he will make the call on which players he wants to build around. With Lamar Jackson, Zay Flowers, and several others on the squad, it is not a secret that he will trend towards the younger stars.

The franchise has a few studs on its team, even though collectively it could not reach the playoffs last season. The blame eventually fell on former head coach John Harbaugh‘s shoulders, and Minter was brought in to give them a fresh start.

That is why many believe that their superstar quarterback is probably playing for his job. Time and again, new coaches tend to go with players whom they believe can help them execute their plans.

Jackson may be one of the league’s best signal callers, but fitting in Minter’s plans is vital if he is to stay a Raven in the future. But it seems Flowers is going to be a part of that future, as was evidenced by the contract extension the team awarded him.

Baltimore’s two-time Pro-Bowl WR Zay Flowers reached agreement today with the Ravens on a four-year, $140 million extension that includes $108 million guaranteed.

This means that the 25-year-old is now set to stay with the team until the end of the 2031 season. On top of that, the money they are about to hand over makes it clear that Zay Flowers is their de facto No. 1 receiver.

Fans left shocked after Ravens hand over Zay Flowers massive extension

NFL players have been breaking the bank of late with record extensions resetting the market at every instance. The $35 million average salary Zay Flowers will earn has not reset the wide receiver market, as that number is way off from the record Jaxon Smith-Njigba set earlier.

However, what did shock fans was that the Florida native will be earning as much as one of the best pass catchers in the league, Justin Jefferson, without having the impact the Vikings superstar has.

They wondered whether the Ravens had not taken into account Flowers’ costly drops when negotiating his contract. Check out examples of those reactions below.

In his defense, Zay Flowers has been consistent since he entered the league. Every young wide receiver experiences growing pains. The expectation is that they will learn and get better. Maybe that is why the Baltimore Ravens decided to pay the two-time Pro Bowler now rather than be forced to cough up more next offseason, when he is a free agent.

Mina Kimes counters Justin Jefferson comparisons after Zay Flowers’ monster deal

These comparisons to Justin Jefferson will continue for a while. Fans believe that Zay Flowers has not yet proven he can win games on his own, as the Vikings star is known for. However, Mina Kimes believes this comparison will not make sense in a year.

I think this contract makes sense. I know folks see him next to Justin Jefferson, and there is a reaction… The WR market is going to reset fast. Puka Nacua is up. He is going to blow this out of the water. This will look reasonable.

The analyst pointed out that fans have this general belief that a team’s top receiver has to be the prototypical big-bodied super-athlete. But of late, offenses have been able to make just about anyone be productive.

She stressed that Flowers wound up being the Ravens’ best receiver despite them signing other top veterans to be their No. 1 guy. Therefore, this contract might look expensive now, but once the market resets, it will end up looking like a bargain, particularly if he consistently produces at the same level.
