When the whole of the NFL has given up on Bryce Young, he has found one who isn’t ready to give up so soon. Surviving in the league is tough, let alone thriving which makes many question whether they are built for this sport. Currently, many are crossing the name of the second-year quarterback from that list, pre-deciding his future in the league.
Amid the ongoing debates, sports analyst Robert Griffin III has come forward to speak in favour of the Carolina Panthers quarterback. Since he has been benched for Andy Dalton following the bizarre 3-26 defeat in week 2, many have been considering it as the death of Young’s NFL career.
However, RG3 refused to accept that notion and has been quite convincing with his arguments stating the contrary. Putting forward the name of Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield’s initial years in the league, Griffin III argued that Young’s struggle might be self-imposed to an extent.
“When you speak on Bryce Young just remember this….Both are THRIVING,” posted Griffin III on his official X handle on a picture of Mayfield and Darnold to show how these two faced similar levels of scrutiny and backlash from fans in their initial days.
Griffin III’s points put forward a valid argument given that there have been very few players who have found success right after entering the league. Even a legend like Tom Brady with the highest count of seven Super Bowl rings in the NFL’s history struggled immensely during his early years playing professional football.
Baker Mayfield empathizes with Bryce Young’s struggles in Carolina
Interestingly, shortly after being compared to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star, the 2023 first-overall pick also received support from him. Baker Mayfield has been Young’s supporter since the beginning and this time, as the criticism got intense, he highlighted the challenges that come with the position of a quarterback.
Quarterback is one of the hardest positions to play in sports, especially for him coming out as a No. 1 pick. Bryce has a great head on his shoulders. I have no doubt that he's going to have a long career. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does-- except for two games out of the year.Baker Mayfield said to the reporters
Additionally, the Pro Bowler signal-caller said that commanding a locker room filled with “grown-a**” men is rather a challenge than a handy task. At the same time, being the best at the college level compared to the standards of the NFL is completely different, which many don’t even have an idea of.
Given, that it wasn’t too long ago when Mayfield was standing in a very similar position to Young, he understands as well as empathizes with him on a deeper note.
