Tragedy struck the William Jewell College football team on Saturday. Running back MicahJo Barnett died after experiencing a medical emergency on the sideline.

About 20 minutes into the Missouri-based Division II school’s season opener against Fort Lewis College, Barnett collapsed on the sidelines. The medical staff quickly attended to the young rusher.

The institute did not provide many details of the incident to the police. But did mention that Barnett was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

Football world mourns the death of MicahJo Barnett

MicahJo Barnett was into his third year with William Jewell College. In his previous two seasons, he had rushed 108 times for 457 yards and six touchdowns in 13 career games.

Barnett was William Jewell College’s star running back. He scored a touchdown in the opening quarter against Fort Lewis College.

According to online game statistics, Barnett scored on a one-yard run with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter. The referee stopped the game with 4:32 left after Barnett collapsed on the sidelines. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Former Heisman Trophy winner and Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III, along with fans across Twitter, expressed grief after hearing about Barnett’s death.

Barnett played High School football at Liberty North. He earned All-Missouri state honors after racking up 1,450 all-purpose yards and scoring 20 TDs.
