Scottie Scheffler‘s cut streak came to an end on Friday. In the second round of The Genesis Scottish Open, the World No.1 fired a 2-over-par score and missed the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event for the first time since 2022.
The 4-time major champion had been on a tear in the past couple of years. He dominated several events and won major titles and an Olympic gold medal. The 2026 season also started with a win for him as he won the American Express.
Since then, he has looked a bit out of touch. While he had top-10 finishes, he had to work hard for them.
In the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Genesis Invitational, he struggled in the opening round. Despite that, he managed to make the cut in all 3 of them.
Last month, before the U.S. Open, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee made a huge comment. He expressed that Scheffler’s game was “off“ and that he was no longer the man who could not be beaten.
🚨❌🏆 #GAME IS OFF — Brandel Chamblee gives his take on World #1 Scottie Scheffler: “His game is off and so he's provided opportunity to the best players in the world. He's still the man to beat, but he is no longer the man that can't be beat.”@SchefflerFans

In his first attempt at the career grand slam, Scheffler finished T4 with scores of 72-68-69-71. A week later, he found himself challenging for another title at the Travelers Championship. After finishing level with Viktor Hovland, the American lost in the playoff round on Monday.
In the opening round at The Genesis Scottish Open, Scheffler fired a 2-under par score. During the second round on Friday, he struggled at the start, carding back-to-back bogeys on Holes 11 and 12.
After a birdie on the 15th hole, he made another bogey on the 17th and fell to 2-over par. On the front nine, he made a birdie on the 1st hole. Scheffler then made 7 straight pars before making another bogey on the final hole.
When his round ended at The Renaissance Club, he was even-par after the first two rounds. With the cutline projected to be 2-under par, this marked the end of Scheffler’s long streak of 78 consecutive cuts. His last missed cut came at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August 2022.

As for the Scottish Open, Scheffler had missed the cut in 2022 as well. He then went on to finish T21 at the Open Championship.
Scottie Scheffler misses first cut in 4 years just before Open Championship defense
All good things must eventually come to an end. Scottie Scheffler‘s streak of 78 successive cuts came to an end on Friday as he finished with an even-par score. This development came just a few days before his Open Championship title defense.

Next week, the 154th Open Championship will take place at the Royal Birkdale course in Merseyside, United Kingdom. Having won the title in a dominating fashion in 2025, Scheffler will enter the field as the reigning champion.
The last thing he wanted before the final major of the year was a setback. He now will go into the tournament on the back of a missed cut.
I felt like I struck it better on the back nine… Overall, not quite good enough. Like I said, I felt like I was hitting it too far from the hole and wasn’t holing any of those putts.
Scottie Scheffler told the reporters after the round on Friday
“I got off to a tough start and then on the back nine I didn’t feel like I was hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities. I think that’s what it really comes down to. I got off to a poor start and didn’t really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks… pic.twitter.com/Sqk3LkZ3DO

This also brought an end to his streak of finishing inside the top-25. The last time he was out of the top-25 was at the BMW Championship in 2024.
Several eyes will now be on him to see how he performs at the Open Championship. Padraig Harrington was the last person to successfully defend the title in this event, having won in 2007 and then repeating as the winner in 2008.
