SHOTS FIRED: Donovan Mitchell breaks multiple NBA records as he drops 71pts against the Bulls
Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs celebrating his performance
Donovan Mitchell was on fire against the Chicago Bulls on Monday, he scored a career-high 71 points. The All-Star had a stellar night and it came when everything was working against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite being down by 18 points before going into halftime, Mitchell willed his team back to win the game with his heroics. The Cavaliers star’s 71 points were the most in a game by any player since Kobe Bryant scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.
Mitchell scored NBA season-high 71 points, and 8th most points in an NBA game in league history. At one point of the game the Cavs were down by 21 points, so coming back from that deficit makes Mitchell’s career-high even more special. However, the highlight of his stellar performance was the circus putback after intentionally missing the last free throw with 3 seconds left on the clock. At the end of regulation, his putback tied the game at 130 each.
Mitchell had only 5 points in the opening quarter, while his team was down by 7 points. In the 2nd quarter, the former Jazz had a decent 11 points, while his team extended the deficit to 18 points. However, coming back into the 3rd quarter, Spida exploded, as he scored 24 points in the quarter. He continued his attack into the 4th quarter and scored another 18 points.
By the end of the 4th quarter, the Cavaliers guard had 58 points, which had already become the franchise record. Kyrie Irving and LeBron James were tied for 57 points record. In the overtime, Spida had Cavs’ 13 of 15 points, as they outscored Bulls 4-15 in the OT. Kyrie Irving, later on, said that Mitchell seemed locked in when he played Call of Duty earlier before the game.
Donovan Mitchell makes an NBA record, only behind Wilt Chamberlin
Mitchell almost had a triple-double in the game, which would have made his career-high even more special. With 71 points, he had 11 assists, a block, and 8 rebounds, only two rebounds shy of a triple-double. The 3 x All-Star scored or assisted on 99 of all Cavs points. It is the second most in the game’s history, after Wilt Chamberlin, who scored 100 points in a game.
After his record-breaking night, Mitchell admitted that he wasn’t well in some of the previous games, and starting the 1st quarter it felt like that again. When asked about his 71-point performance and franchise record, Mitchell said, he was in shock. “I was shocked, I was cramping, I couldn’t walk in the final minute and a half,” Donovan said.
