American legend Lindsey Vonn has her dream fulfilled as she skated down the legendary Streif in Austria, Kitzvbuhel. She became the first woman to do so and set another glorious record for an already long list of accolades. Even after Vonn’s forced retirement due to injuries, her strive to challenge the difficult course didn’t change.
Her coach, dad, and people supporting her looked up to her as she took the first step downhill. Vonn said that to ride this course she borrowed Ryan Cochran-Siegle’s skis. She became the first one to conquer the notorious 3,312-meter stride at night.
Vonn commented, “The Streif is literally the pinnacle of downhill. Period. It’s the hardest track in the world. People have died on this track, and it’s something that I felt for me personally, if I could make it down one time, that would be a huge accomplishment”.
“And then after my injuries, I just didn’t think that it would ever be possible. So for me to have this opportunity and actually be able to do it physically was beyond a dream come true.”

Lindsey Vonn said that her night ride reminded her of her childhood days. Back in those times, she used to come from school and start her night practices. Though their road in the Streif was lit with light, the fear of jumping onto the icy road still persisted.
Vonn stated, “I think it prepared me well for this experience and also racing at night. It definitely feels like a full circle, growing up racing, training in the night and in the dark, and now being able to do the Streif at night”.
“It was interesting because Daron (Rahlves) saw that in me and I don’t think many people actually do see that in me. They see that I love winning, but I just love going fast. I’m a thrill seeker. I’m an adrenaline junkie. I love pushing myself to the absolute limit and being on the verge of being scared.”
Vonn further said that she wasn’t scared when she strode down, as she knew her late mother would be watching over her as her guardian angel. Plus having her dad watch her go, gave her the assurance she needed.
“I knew she was watching me and was there as a guardian angel to help me accomplish this dream”. “Whenever I told her I was doing something insane, she never even worried.”
“She always said, ‘you know what you’re doing. I’m right here behind you.’ And again, I thought if there’s ever a time to do it, it’s now because now I have someone extra helping me.”
Apart from snatching 82 World Cup wins, she added that her Streif ski will be one of the most memorable lifetime achievements. She said that if one can complete this course then “you’re a true downhiller”. After Mikaela Shiffrin’s recent 83rd World Cup win, she congratulated her and said that she always knew Mikaela can break the record.
