Sone Akira of Japan secured the gold medal for the Japanese Judo team in +78kg, and with this, she secured the 9th gold for her country. This was the last weight category in the women’s division, and Sone Akira made the most out of this opportunity. Her journey has been amazing and today she achieved her life-long dream of winning the gold at the Olympic games.
Sone Akira worked really hard for this win, and she went through extremely tough competition to earn her spot. In the elimination round of 16, she defeated HERSHKO Raz of Israel with a sensational Ippon to move further in the competition. In the quarter-finals, she defeated SAYIT Kayra of Turkey to claim her spot in the finals. Her semi-final bout was against KINDZERSKA Iryna of Azerbaijan, and she defeated her with two Waza-aris to claim her spot in the finals. The gold medal contest was between Sone Akira and ORTIZ Idalys of Cuba who lost the fight via Hansoku-make, making Sone the champion.

Idalys Ortiz of Cuba fought really hard all throughout the competition, but she came up short against Sone in the finals. In the elimination round of 16, she defeated NUNES Rochele of Portugal with a Waza-ari to advance further in the contest. She faced XU Shiyan of China in the quarter-finals and defeated her with two Waza-aris to advance in the finals. She faced DICKO Romane of France in the semi-finals, and defeated her to claim her spot in the finals, she lost the finals but she managed to secure a silver medal for her country.
KINDZERSKA Iryna of Azerbaijan and DICKO Romane of France secured the bronze medals

KINDZERSKA Iryna of Azerbaijan had a nice run at the tournament, she won two fights to secure her place in the semi-finals, but she lost that round to the gold medalist Akira, she was then placed in repechage bracket and won the bronze medal fight to secure the third place at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

DICKO Romane of France also won two fights prior to losing the semi-final bout, she then faced SAYIT Kayra of Turkey in the bronze medal contest and defeated her to secure the third position.
