Stefanos Tsitsipas made quick work of Marton Fucsovics in the first round of the French Open. Before the match, in a press conference, he addressed who the biggest threat in the tournament is.
The Greek ace was asked who he thinks is the favorite to win Roland Garros, and he spontaneously said Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the top contender, while smiling, indicating it was not exactly a serious answer despite him saying otherwise. The two had played a practice set earlier and Fokina is rumored to have gotten the better of Tsitsipas, 6-2. Tsitsipas’ answer may have been an acknowledgment of this.
I would probably say Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. I’m serious (smiling).Stefanos Tsitsipas said
After his first-round win, he was asked the same question again and went on to explain that despite all the setbacks this year, Novak Djokovic remains the favorite as he has a few French Open titles in his tally.
Well, I think it’s split equally from all sides. There is not one particular player that is perhaps, you know, like thinking about it now, I would say probably it’s Novak Djokovic is still the favorite because he has won here a few times.Stefanos Tsitsipas said
He believes this Roland Garros is more open than others, as he says the chances of winning are split evenly between all the top contenders.
Obviously Carlos Alcaraz always remains the favorite, and so does Jannik Sinner. I feel like these are opponents that can play all-around equally on all surfaces, and they have incredible shots and of course speed on the court. They have what it takes to play good on clay. And a few other players that I haven’t mentioned, as well.Stefanos Tsitsipas added
He feels Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, amongst other players, are also in the running for the title.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa to take part in mixed doubles at Roland Garros after they got back together
Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have had a rollercoaster year, both on court and off it. The two had announced that they were no longer together earlier this month, with Badosa even saying Tsitsipas was “the right person but at the wrong time”.
Less than a month after their breakup, the two were seen together again at Roland Garros and Tsitsipas confirmed that they had indeed rekindled their relationship ahead of the tournament. The two have played mixed doubles a couple of times and are now set to play in their first Grand Slam event.
They take on the specialist doubles pair of Ena Shibahara and Nathaniel Lammons. Tsitsipas is also partnering up with his brother, Petros, to play the men’s doubles, where they take on John-Patrick Smith and Denys Molchanov.
