Summer Olympics: Top 10 countries with most medals in Olympic Games

As the Olympic fever grips one and all, we wait with bated breath to see which country tops the charts this time. Before that, let us first know which country stands at the top with the most medals in Olympic Games. Each year new players from each country debut with their nation’s hopes riding on them. Factors such as hosting country and availability of financial resources often play a role in the country’s performance and their consequent medal tally.

List of top 10 countries with most medals in Olympic Games

United States of America (USA) – 2523 Medals

One simply cannot imagine the Olympic Games without the USA’s participation. Being the toughest competitors, sometimes with more than one representative in each sport event, the US holds the highest medal tally with a whopping 2523 medals in total – 1022 gold medals, 795 silver medals, and 706 bronze medals.

With many great players in multiple fields like Michael Phelps in swimming, Evelyn Ashford in Athletics to Simone Biles– the USA has made its place at the top of the chart and has participated in all editions of Olympics except for one and has been the hosted multiple Olympics, more than any country.  

Russia – 1556 Medals

Russian players have participated in multiple editions of the Olympics since 1896, as representatives of the Soviet Union and Russia. With a total of 1556 medals – 590 gold medals, 486 silver, and 480 bronze medals, it has the second-highest medal tally in Summer Olympics. With many renowned players in multiple fields like Larisa Latynina in gymnastics and Maria Sharapova in lawn tennis, Russia holds its place in second place in the Olympic chart.

Germany – 1346 Medals

Germany too has participated in multiple editions of the Olympics and has also hosted quite a few of them-namely the 1936 and 1972 Summer Olympics. Germany holds the third-highest medal tally in Summer Olympics with 1346 medals – 428 gold, 444 silver, and 474 bronze. Many eminent players like Birgit Fischer in Canoeing and Manfred Klein in rowing have represented Germany in their field of sports.

Great Britain – 851 Medals

Great Britain has participated in all editions of the modern Olympics since its inception in 1896. With 851 medals in total- 263 gold, 295 silver, and 293 bronze medals, Great Britain is always in the top 5 countries with the highest medal tally in Summer Olympics. It has many renowned sportspersons to boast of, namely – Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny in track-cycling and Andy Murray in Tennis.

China – 546 Medals

Chinese players are always a force to look out for in Olympics. They have the fifth-highest medal tally with 546 medals in total – 224 gold, 167 silver, and 155 bronze medals. They participate in a plethora of events ranging from fencing, shooting, athletics and have many prominent sportspersons.

France – 716 Medals

France has participated in almost all editions of the Summer Olympics with the most amount of medals in the sports of fencing and cycling.  With a total medal tally of 716 – 212 gold, 241 silver, and 263 bronze medals, France has been a strong competitor to other countries in the Olympics.

Italy – 577 Medals

With a total medal tally of 577 Olympic medals- 206 gold, 178 silver, and 193 bronze medals, Italy has competed in all the editions of the Summer Olympics. Putting its best foot forward in the field of fencing and shooting, it has secured its place in the top 10 nations with the highest medal tally in Olympics.

Hungary – 491 Medals

Hungary is one of the many countries that have been a part of almost all the editions of the Summer Olympics since its inception in 1896. Hungarian players have won a total of 491 medals for their country with 175 gold, 147 silver, and 169 bronze medals. They have always given the tough competition in the field of fencing and water polo.

Australia – 497 Medals

Australia has also participated in all editions of the Summer Olympics and also hosted several of them like the 1956 and 2000 Olympics. With a medal tally of 497 medals – 147 gold, 163 silver, and 187 bronze, Australia has made its way to the top 10 in the chart and has produced some very good players in the field of swimming and athletics.

Sweden – 494 Medals

Sweden is one among the many countries that participated in the inaugural edition of the Summer Olympics in 1896. With 494 medals in total – 145 gold, 170 silver, and 179 bronze medals, Sweden scores its highest number of medals in the sport of wrestling and athletics.
