Gervonta Davis recently mocked Edgar Berlanga on social media after Berlanga returned to Puerto Rico. The young boxer was celebrating with his fans despite his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez. This drew criticism from the undefeated American boxer. Here is what happened:
Edgar Berlanga had an unsuccessful bout against Canelo Alvarez, marking his first professional loss. That dropped his record to 22-1. However, it did not stop Berlanga from celebrating. His post-loss celebrations drew criticism from Gervonta Davis, who took to X, to sarcastically congratulate the Puerto Rican on his defeat. The tweet has now been deleted.
Canelo Alvarez defeated Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision. They fought earlier this September during Mexican Independence Day in Las Vegas. Canelo successfully retained his unified WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles. Alvarez knocked Berlanga down in the third round with a powerful left hook and controlled most of the fight.
The boxing icon out-landed the 27-year-old 201 to 119. Despite Berlanga’s attempts to make a comeback, he was unable to overcome Canelo’s experience and superior ring control. The fight ended with scorecards reading 118-109 twice and 117-110 in favor of Canelo.
Edgar Berlanga claps back at Gervonta Davis
Edgar Berlanga did not hold himself back after Gervonta Davis called him out on X. The Puerto Rican stirred up drama on social media by criticizing Gervonta “Tank” Davis for placing a weight clause on Ryan Garcia during their fight in April 2023. Berlanga accused Davis of being afraid to fight tougher opponents at their best.
He particularly pointed out that Davis allegedly dodged a potential fight with Jose Valenzuela (“Rayo”) because of his performance against Isaac Cruz. Berlanga took a shot at Davis by suggesting the weight clause was a strategic move to weaken Garcia. He called Davis a “s*cker” for trying to protect himself against a real threat. Incidentally, Berlanga also deleted the following tweet.
This rehydration clause was a key point of contention in the Davis-Garcia fight. It required both fighters to weigh no more than 10 pounds over the 136-pound catchweight on the day of the fight. Ryan Garcia himself admitted that this clause left him feeling slightly drained during the match. Despite the tension, Davis won by knockout, but critics like Berlanga argue that these tactics helped Davis not to face opponents at full strength.
