WTA Eastbourne 2021: Bianca Andreescu vs Anett Kontaveit Preview, Head to Head and Predictions for Viking International

In the second round at the WTA Eastbourne 2021, World No. 7 and the 3rd seeded Bianca Andreescu will be up against World No. 27 Anett Kontaveit.

Bianca Andreescu registers her maiden victory in a main-draw of a Grass tournament as she defeats American Christina Mchale 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in just over 2 hours. Bianca made her main-draw debut last week at the WTA Berlin Open but was defeated in her 1st match by Alize Cornet, delaying her first ever victory on the surface on the WTA tour.

She had previously played on the ITF tour and tried her luck in the qualifiers of the Wimbledon 2017 and 2018 but failed to win in the main draw of the 2017 edition where she entered by winning all 3 of her qualifying matches. She however failed to reach the main draw at the 2018 Wimbledon.

Anett Kontaveit wins on her Grass debut of the season as she moves past Svetlena Kuznetsova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in just under the 2 hour mark, advancing into the 2nd round at the Eastbourne 2021. Anett did not play in any other tournament before this as she targets this week to prepare for the Grand Slam in Wimbledon that begins in less than a week.

Kontaveit last played on the tour at the French Open 2021 where she was defeated in the 3rd round by defending champion, Iga Swiatek in straight-sets after having taken Swiatek into the tiebreaker in the 1st set but failed to capitalise on the important moments.

This will be their 2nd meeting and 1st on Grass as their last meeting took place at the 2019 Miami Open in the 4th round where Bianca had to retire mid-match due to an injury. Anett Kontaveit leads the head-to-head tie 1-0.

Bianca will come into the clash with a career Grass record of 13-6 which includes primarily her ITF appearances and qualifiers of the Wimbledon. She has a season record of 12-5 after her leg injury in the finals of the 2021 Miami Open cut short her season. While she’s struggling to return back to form, it will be difficult for her to play against the experienced Kontaveit.

Kontaveit will take the court with a career Grass record of 45-18 and an overall season record of 16-8. Her only Singles title came at the 2017 ‘S-Hertogenbosch Open and she certainly knows how to win matches on Grass. Looking at her numbers on the surface and Bianca’s struggle to regain her best form, Anett will be the favourite for this clash.

Prediction: Anett Kontaveit to win in 3-sets.
