Andy Murray likely to get a wild card at French Open 2021
Andy Murray
3-time grand slam champion Andy Murray is under recovery currently and is looking forward to step on court very soon. Since 2017, his career has been hit with various injuries and he hasn’t been anywhere near to his prime.
Murray came to Rome to practice alongside the best in the world as players were gearing up for the Rome Masters. He took to the court with Argentine Diego Schwartzman in Rome on Sunday and the 33-year-old was back out hitting balls on the dirt with Djokovic on Monday.
The Briton was then handed a last minute entry into the Doubles main draw alongwith partner Liam Broady. The pair won their first round match defeating Australians Saville/Purcell in three sets 5-7,7-6(5),10-6.
‘He sure deserves a wild card’: Guy Forget
Andy Murray is recovering from a minor groin injury he suffered during his sleep ahead of the Miami Open in March. And due to lack of tennis played, his chances of getting a wild card at the French Open is in jeopardy.
Murray had earlier said that he will be going through the Qualifiers in Paris if he doesn’t get a wild card. But according to French tennis administrator Guy Forget, the former World No.1 ‘deserves’ a wild card at Roland Garros.
“Once again, Andy is a great player. It is a discussion we have to have with him and our team. We want to see him in good shape. I hope he feels well,” Forget said.
“He hasn’t played any matches yet, which is obviously what any players wants to do before committing to a big tournament, especially when you are going to be play the best of five sets.”
He continued: “I know Andy Murray is practicing. I’m gonna talk to him or his agent. We’ll see who request for a wild-card. He sure deserves one. I hope he feels well. We have to take decision as a team. Decision next week.”
Murray/Broady will next face Krawietz/Tecau in the Round of 16 at Rome.
