Andy Murray’s former coach calls his comeback win in the first round a ‘MIRACLE’

Andy Murray played a thriller against the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round of Australian Open. The former world No.1 looked determined to win the match and despite losing two close sets Murray made a comeback in the final set and won the match in style.
This win was even more special considering the event that happened at the same venue 3 years ago. When Murray suffered from the same hip injury and lost a similar 5-set thriller against Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Australian Open 2019.
His former coach Alex Corretja applauded his efforts in an interview with the Eurosport and deemed his first-round victory as a ‘Miracle’.
The comeback of a life time for Andy Murray
The 2019 Australian Open was one of the worst majors for Andy Murray. The 3-time Grand Slam champion was playing the first round against Roberto Bautista Agut. His movements during the first two sets suggested that he was suffering from a bad injury and couldn’t keep up with Agut.
After losing the first two sets, Murray stood tall in the face of adversity. He started the uphill journey of winning the match and winning two tough sets. But in the end, the inevitable kicked in and the Brit lost the final set and ended his Australian Open journey. In the post-match press conference, Murray got emotional as he thought this could very well be his last game at the Australian Open or his last game ever.
However, three years after that incident Murray made his way back to the land down under with a metal hip. He isn’t half the player he was before physically but he still has the mental skills to beat his opponents. That is what we did in his first-round win against Nikoloz Basilashvili. The former world this time won a 5-set thriller and got his first win at the Australian Open in 5 years.
After the match, Murray’s former coach Alex Corretja applauded Murray for his unbelievable performance. He said, “When you see him winning now you realize that he is always a champion, always a fighter, and he will give everything he has to finish his career the best he can, “He has been dreaming to give the 100 percent he has got to finish his career healthy and give everything he has. It’s amazing what he is doing, I would say almost a miracle, only people like him who have a special feeling with tennis can do that.”
“I am very happy to see him winning, I consider him like a little brother, we have been through a lot of things, we have worked together, I was at his wedding, we have a great relationship with the family. “He is someone who is very important in my life and I learned a lot from him. I was trying to help him and advise him but I also learned a lot from him. It’s very special for me to see him winning.” Corretja added.
Andy Murray is indeed a champion of the game. He will be facing the Japanese Taro Daniel in his second-round match on Thursday and his fans will be hoping that the brit moves into round three.
