Former US Open champion Andy Roddick feels Alexander Zverev will soon his first Grand Slam
Alexander Zverev
World No.4 Alexander Zverev’s winning juggernaut was finally halted by the immovable and irresistible, World No.1 Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian superstar overcame the challenge of the German in five, epic sets in the second semifinals of the 2021 US Open, on Friday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Zverev came into the match at the back of an unbeaten streak, since the start of the Tokyo Olympics. After stunning Djokovic in the semifinals in Tokyo, Zverev ended up winning the gold medal.
Later, the 24-year-old carried on his rich form on the North American hard courts and won the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati. Zverev then entered the 2021 US Open with a realistic chance of winning his maiden Slam.
The No.4 seed even got off the blocks in the early rounds, and only managed to drop one set, en-route to the semis. Unfortunately, the top seed took his level to a new high, which saw Zverev’s 16-match winning streak derail.
As the match was taking place, former World No.1 and 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick tweeted, suggesting that while Zverev might not end up winning the US Open this year, but he has all the ammunition to win his first Major going ahead.
“It might not be this week but I don’t think I’ve ever been more convinced that Zverev will win a slam. What a stand he just made …… the level that game. Wow,” the American tweeted.
Zverev can leapfrog Tsitsipas in the rankings
The German player is ranked No.3 in the ATP rankings currently, but given his impressive run this year in New York, he is likely to eclipse the Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas soon in the men’s rankings.
Going forward, Zverev is likely to show up at the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells and Paris.
