Kiki Bertens vs Marta Kostyuk: Preview
Last year, Kostyuk won the $60k ITF Cairo. In addition, she won the Cairo doubles event partnering Kamilla Rakhimova. In the first round of the US Open 2020, she defeated former top-10 player Daria Kasatkina in straight sets. She then defeated Anastasija Sevastova, a previous semifinalist. She faced previous champion and world No. 9 Naomi Osaka in the third round. She recovered from a first-set loss by winning the second in a tie-breaker, but she was defeated in the third. This year, she upset former French Open winner Garbie Muguruza in the first round of the French Open, 6–1, 6–4. She advanced to the fourth round, where she was beaten by reigning champion Iga Swiatek.
Bertens was sidelined for the start of the 2021 season after undergoing Achilles tendon surgery at the end of 2020. Her first event after recovering from surgery was in Doha, where she lost in straight sets against Jelena Ostapenko in her first match. She was knocked out in the second round by Veronika Kudermetova, dropping her ranking to No. 17 in the world. She lost in three sets against Polona Hercog in the first round of the French Open, and her ranking slipped to No. 20 Bertens then stated, that 2021 would be her final season, claiming an inability to compete at the top level due to injuries, and that she would either retire after the Olympics or at the conclusion of the season.
