“Sascha Zverev has to be world no. 1” – Boris Becker elucidated on his hopes for a tennis ‘boom’ in the country

Boris Becker and Alexander Zverev
Six-time grand slam champion and former world no. 1 Boris Becker said in an interview that he wishes for Alexander Zverev to be the greatest German tennis player of all time. He also believes that Zverev can become the world no. 1 by next year if he manages to win a grand slam.
Alexander Zverev made it to 6 finals this year, winning all of them. His achievements for 2021 include 2 ATP 500 titles, 2 Masters 1000 titles, the Olympic Gold Medal and the ATP Finals. The younger German now sits at the 3rd spot of the ATP rankings.
Boris Becker won his first grand slam title at the age of 17. He has won 3 Wimbledon, 2 Australian Open, and 1 US Open title. In 1991, he was ranked no. 1 in the world.
Boris Becker on Alexander Zverev:

The older German, who had won his first grand slam at the age of 17, spoke of Zverev on the podcast Das Gelbe vom Ball- “the next big goal for Sascha [Alexander] Zverev is to be the number one. He can make it in next year in my eyes. But that’s only possible if he wins one or two grand slam tournaments.”
He further added “You saw it this year: the clear number one was Djokovic with three Grand Slam wins, the clear number two was Medvedev with one Grand Slam win and the clear number three was Sascha. Certainly, an ATP Finals title is an absolute highlight in one’s career – he has won that twice – and victory at the Olympics was certainly unique, but the next big triumph has to be a victory at a Grand Slam tournament. Then you get closer to your dream.”
I want him to be the most successful German player of all time – Boris Becker on Alexander Zverev

The 54-year-old Becker is undoubtedly the Germany’s most successful male tennis player. His fame is preceded only by the legendary Steffi Graf. They were the torch bearers of tennis in Germany during the 80s and 90s. Now, Boris Becker hopes for a new German superstar in the form of Alexander Zverev. He said “I would like him go become the most successful tennis player of all time. Then we would have a lot to celebrate and we would have a tennis boom in Germany again. We would all be winners. I am his biggest fan and I hope he can do it.”
