Spanish Second seed Pablo Carreno Busta hasn’t been in the best of form since winning the German Open post the 2021 Wimbledon. He then won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics after beating Novak Djokovic. He reached the quarterfinals at both Cincinnati Masters and Winston-Salem Open but lost in the opening round of the US Open. 

This week in Metz, he beat Mikael Ymer in straight sets 7-5,6-2 in the Round of 16 after receiving a first round bye. He followed it up by defeating Holger Rune in three sets 6-4,3-6,6-4.

As for his opponent, Gael Monfils, he has had a terrible season but is slowly and steadily gaining form post Wimbledon. He reached the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters and followed it up with a Round of 16 outing at the Cincinnati Masters. He then made it to the third round of the US Open before losing to Jannik Sinner in five tight sets.

In Metz, he is yet to lose a set. He defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Round of 16 before getting the better of Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets 6-3,6-3.
