‘It’s phenomenal – seven years and counting!’ Chanda Rubin on Novak Djokovic’s record breaking feat

Novak Djokovic
World No.1 Novak Djokovic undoubtedly has had a stellar season so far. He started the year with a victory Down under and followed it up with back to back grand slam winning performances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He was just a win away from creating history at Flushing Meadows where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the final and was denied a calendar slam.
This week on Bercy, Djokovic notched up a tight win over Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinal which assured him of a year end No.1 ranking. This will be a record 7th time when Djokovic ends a year as the World No.1. Needless to say, the Serbian machine is lauded all over the world for his emphatic feat.
Former World No.6 Chanda Rubin also opined her thoughts on Djokovic’s latest milestone. On Tennis Channel, she spoke about how Djokovic has overcome pressure for all these years for which he doesn’t get enough credit.
“The opportunity to set a new record – and it’s been pretty impressive this year with all the pressure that he had on him, what he was playing under every Major, and he still won three and got to the final of the fourth one,” Rubin said. “I don’t think we give him enough credit for that, we expect him to do well every time he walks out onto the court.”
Rubin emphasizes on Djokovic’s clutch mindset

Rubin further added that despite the difference in age, Djokovic has managed to adapt to his peers and beat them. “But to come through these big moments against players like Hurkacz who are having a career year, who are difficult to beat, (and are) playing some of their best tennis, and Djokovic, he just seems to be able to wear them down and to come in with the right mindset,” Rubin added.
She further said that Djokovic has done all this in the same era where Federer and Nadal were active, which makes it even more special.
“I mean that is a tremendous achievement when you consider he is playing alongside Federer and Nadal who also have been World No. 1s at the end of the year,” Rubin said. “It’s phenomenal – seven years and counting!”
