Tokyo Olympics 2020: Daniil Medvedev bows out in straight-sets to Pablo Carreno Busta

Pablo Carreno Busta and Daniil Medvedev
World No. 10 and the 6th seeded Pablo Carreno Busta from Spain defeats World No. 2 and the 2nd seeded Daniil Medvedev in straight-sets to move into the semi-finals of the Men’s Singles in his debut Olympic Games.
Pablo ended Medvedev’s misery at the Olympics defeating the Russian Olympic Committee’s(ROC) player 6-2, 7-6(5) in 1 hour and 42 minutes to continue his dream debut while ending the Olympics for Medvedev on a sad note. While the match was wrapped up in straight-sets, the score does not justify the effort and performance put in by Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
Pablo won the tie with 62 points to his name while Medvedev had 58. It was anyone’s game right till the final point but Pablo prevailed. Medvedev had struggled with the heat in Japan that saw him getting treatment for cramps in his Round of 16 clash that led to his argument with the umpire as well, but today things did not go in his favour as Pablo had the answers for everything.
Medvedev hit 4 aces while Pablo managed 3. Pablo had 100% returns on the 2nd serve while Daniil had 96%. It all came down eventually to the break-points as Medvedev had only 1 break-point which he managed to win but Pablo had 6 break-point opportunities winning 3 of them.
Pablo Carreno Busta to meet Daniil Medvedev’s compatriot Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals

The Russian challenge at the Olympics for a medal in tennis will continue despite Medvedev’s defeat as ROC’s Karen Khachanov will be up against Busta in the semi-finals as the only ROC player left in the Singles event. The ROC saw its team of Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova being defeated in the semi-finals of the Women’s Doubles and proceeding for the Bronze Medal match.
Elsewhere, ROC’s Mixed Doubles team of Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova confirmed their qualification in the semi-finals of the competition.
With a chance for yet another medal in Men’s Singles, all hopes will now be resting on Khachanov’s shoulder who will look to avenge the defeat of his fellow compatriot and at the same time qualify for the Gold Medal match in Men’s Singles. Khachanov enters the semi-finals defeating France’s Ugo Humbert in 3-sets to extend his debut run in the Olympics.
