While it would be silly to write off Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning a few more Grand Slams in time to come, it is pretty certain that the dominance of the big-three will significantly reduce in 2022.

World No.2 Daniil Medvedev’s stunning victory over the 20-time Grand Slam champion at the recently concluded 2021 US Open finals is further a testimony to the conviction.

After failing at the first two Grand Slam finals against Nadal and Djokovic, Medvedev turned the tables in New York to register his maiden Major title win. While it must be said that Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas have been winning several ATP titles on the tour, there are yet to win a Grand Slam. Interestingly, all three have previously appeared in a Major final.

Meanwhile, 2020 US Open winner too has backed the newly crowned US Open champion to win many more titles going ahead. In fact, the Austrian in his chat to Eurosport opined that Medvedev is ahead of Zverev and Tsitsipas in terms of handling pressure and staying in the moment.

“I have no doubts that Daniil will win other Grand Slam tournaments. For me, he is the closest of the younger generation. He knows how to win games, he knows how to prepare for the big games. This is when he should be beaten, because he does not fidget and is not nervous. He is one step ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev,” the 28-year-old said.

Currently, Thiem is recuperating from the wrist injury that he suffered on the grass courts of Mallorca, ahead of Wimbledon. The Austrian did harbour thoughts of defending his crown in New York, but reconsidered his decision.

In the week gone by, the former World No.3 vowed to return stronger in 2022, ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia.
