Daniil Medvedev was knocked out of Roland Garros 2023 in round 1 by Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in a five-set thriller. This is the fifth time that Medvedev has been knocked out in the first round. This loss has, however, shaken the entire tennis world, as Medvedev came into the French Open after winning his first-ever clay ATP 1000 tournament, the Italian Open. He defeated Holger Rune in the Italian Open final, who is considered quite lethal on clay.

Thiago Seyboth Wild took the first set off of Medvedev, but the World No. 2 regained his composure and won the subsequent two sets. However, in the fourth set, Medvedev lost his calm when the crowd started booing him as he called the chair umpire to check the mark. From then on, it was downhill for Daniil Medvedev, as he quickly lost the fourth set to Wild and then later lost the fifth set too.

Tennis experts were comparing Thiago Seybouth Wild with the only Brazilian to have ever won French Open, Gustavo Kuerten. World No. 172 Thiago qualified for the main draws of Roland Garros by winning three rounds. He was in great form in the qualifiers as he dropped only one set.

In the second round, the Brazilian will next take on either of the two Frenchmen Quentin Halys or Guido Pella after their first-round match. This was a huge upset as after the Italian Open Medvedev win had also become a heavy favorite at Roland Garros 2023.

Twitter went into a tizzy as soon as the match between Daniil Medvedev and Thiago Seyboth Wild concluded. A group of people pointed out saying that even though Daniil won the Italian Open, that did not convert him into a clay court expert. A lot of them felt his result was not as shocking as everyone made it to be owing to Medvedev’s recent performance and his rank.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

People could not believe that Daniil Medvedev who showed great movement and talent in the Italian Open faced a first-round exit. Medvedev had defeated Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev on his way to the championship. Hence his fan base was in total disbelief when he lost to a qualifier.
