Victoria Azarenka vs Svetlana Kuznetsova: Preview

Victoria Azarenka

Former World No.1, Victoria Azarenka is the fifteenth seed of the tournament. The Belarusian contended in Madrid Open in hopes to regain her stride on clay. However, she withdrew from her second round cash against Jessica Pegula, citing a lower-back injury. Furthermore, this persistent injury restricted her from partaking in any other clay events this year.

On the other end of the court will be Svetlana Kuznetsova, who decided to steer clear of the entire clay-court season. The 35-year-old advanced to the semi-final in St. Petersburg Open. Elsewhere, Kuznetsova was last seen at the Miami Open, wherein she failed to move past Alizé Cornet and faced a first round defeat of 6-2, 2-6, 1-6.

Victoria Azarenka
Victoria Azarenka

The pendulum can swing either way since both players haven’t spent much time on clay in 2021. Even so, Azarenka is the favourite heading into the battle on account of her current ranking and past results. The question of her injury remains in the back of everyone’s mind as of now. Kuznetsova can gain an edge if she is met with a knackered Azarenka.

Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to win in three gruelling sets.
