Daniil Medvedev has sailed into his second consecutive ATP Finals summit clash. In the semifinals of the year-end championships, Medvedev faced Casper Ruud of Norway. The US Open champion eased past the 22 year-old in straight sets. The Russian served a swift 6-4 6-2 defeat to the world no. 8.

The ATP Finals feature the top 8 singles and doubles players. It is the last event of the year, and showcases only the best-performing athletes. The 8 players are divided into groups of 4. Daniil Medvedev is a member of Red Group, which also included Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini (replaced by Jannik Sinner), and Hubert Hurkacz). Medvedev, who is the seeded second in the tournament, is also the defending champion, having lifted the trophy last year in London. He has won all 3 of his group-stage matches.

Post his win over Ruud, Daniil Medvedev was interview about a number of things. On being asked about the mandatory vaccination protocol for the upcoming 2022 Australian Open, Medvedev said “I actually am a little bit surprised that they confirmed it so late. It’s been months. At least I knew that’s probably the case.”

Daniil Medvedev said that he had observed his opponent Casper Ruud this year, and is happy to have defeated him. “It’s a tough match no matter the score and I’m pleased that I managed to break him from time to time and this made the difference today. It was a great match because I felt that watching Casper this year he’s one of the smartest players on the tour” he said.

At the 2021 ATP Finals, Daniil Medvedev won all of his group-stage matches, and then went on to beat Casper Ruud in the semis. Speaking about this, he said “I think all the matches were a great level. Different opponents and different styles. I managed to win all the matches. It was not an easy match [against Ruud]. When you are in the final you can’t complain, so I am just looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully I can have my best match.”

The person who will meet the defending champion in the finale is yet to be determined. The other semifinal bout features Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, both of whom are past winners of this prestigious tournament. With regards to his supposed opponent, Medvedev commented “At this moment we are the Top 3 in the rankings. Just three of us left here, so I am looking forward to a great match tomorrow no matter who I play. I had a few tough matches against Novak lately and a few tough matches against Sascha and one here this week, so it is going to be interesting.”
