World No. 1 on the ATP Tour, Novak Djokovic has taken Serbian tennis to new heights with his sensational display on the Tour and winning accolades. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has always shown love towards his country and not only in tennis, but follows quite a lot of sports that has Serbian teams and players participating in.
Novak was instrumental in leading Serbia to its first and so far the only Davis Cup title in 2010 and remains the only Olympic medallist in tennis from the country winning the Bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He came close to a 2nd Olympics bronze but lost in the bronze medal match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
As he leads Serbia into the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, Novak won his first match in straight-sets in Serbia’s 3-0 win over Austria in their first round-robin match. Representing Serbia has always been one of his proudest achievements and Novak expressed his happiness after the match against Austria.
“I am always very motivated to represent my country. In an individual sport like tennis, I really miss feeling involved in something related to a team, to my compatriots. I will always be available to participate in events like this or the ATP Cup, the team competitions that we have now,” said Novak.

Just a few days prior to the beginning of the tournament, Djokovic had criticised the new Davis Cup format that sees the group stages taking place in 3 different cities and then the knockouts getting eventually narrowed to one city. Calling the latest structure extreme, Djokovic gave his opinion on the latest structure.
“Davis Cup went from one extreme to the other a few years ago, when the whole competition was held in one city (Madrid), which I did not like at all. On the other hand, I do not think that the old format is the best solution either. My vote goes to something in between, something similar to what they are trying to do now,” said Novak.
Earlier World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev had also commented on the tournament’s scheduling as it gives very little time for the players to relax and rest after playing the entire year.
