23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams, is inarguably one of the greatest athletes of all time. She has been ruling the tennis world for more than two decades now and has won many laurels on the court. However, is she the best ever female tennis player?
Serena Williams is one of those players who has won almost every Grand Slam title in every category. So far, she just hasn’t won the Australian Open and the French Open in the mixed doubles category but she has been the runner-up of both tournaments.
As of now, she has won 37 Grand Slam titles in her career in all the categories that she has played. Even though that is a big number, there are other players who has won many more majors than her in women’s tennis.
Australian Legend Margaret Court has won a whopping 64 Grand Slam titles across all the categories. Even, Martina Navratilova has also won 59 Slams in her career. In such a situation, it’ll be wrong to say that Serena is the greatest player of all time when Court and Navratilova have a lot more titles than her.
Serena Williams can equalize Margaret Court in an intriguing record
Although it is highly unlikely that Serena will surpass Court and Navratilova in the Grand Slam tally, she can overtake Court in the singles Grand Slam tally.
As of now, Court has the highest number of Grand Slam singles titles (24). Serena is just one behind her and has been chasing her 24th major for more than four years now. Even though she has played four Grand Slam finals in this period, she has not been able to win a Slam.
If Serena succeeds at the Wimbledon Championships 2021, she’ll tie Court in the Grand Slam tally. She’ll also be the second player to win 24 majors across the ATP and WTA and under such circumstances, she’ll come closer to Court in the G.O.A.T debate.
However, as of now, Court is way ahead of Serena because at the end, it’s a number’s game and stats do matter. Will Serena be able to break Court’s record this year?
