Barbora Krejcikova vs Clara Tauson: Preview
Krejková made her most significant progress in 2021, reaching the final of a WTA 1000 event for the first time, losing to Garbie Muguruza. Krejková won her first women’s singles title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg earlier this year.
She reached her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal at the French Open 2021, defeating 2018 finalist Sloane Stephens 6–2, 6–0 in just 67 minutes. She also overcame Coco Gauff in straight sets after saving five set points to advance to the semi-finals, where she defeated Maria Sakkari in three sets, saving a match point to reach her maiden Grand Slam final in only her fifth Grand Slam main draw appearance in singles. She defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets in the final to win her maiden Grand Slam singles title, becoming the tournament’s third Czech winner following Hana Mandlková 40 years ago. The champion of French open would bee hoping to continue her form at Wimbledon 2021 as well.
Clara Tauson qualified for the WTA 250 Lyon Open at the end of February. She reached her maiden WTA final in this tournament, defeating top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova on the way. In the final, she defeated Viktorija Golubic, a fellow qualifier whom she had previously defeated at the Fujairah International Women Tennis Open in January. For the first time on the WTA Tour, she was seeded at the Copa Colsanitas at the start of the clay-court season in April.
She did, however, lose in the first round. The MUSC Health Open in Charlston was her next tournament. She advanced to the quarterfinals but had to withdraw against Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, the Colombian champion, due to a knee injury she sustained during the competition. She was unable to compete at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open due to an injury. In the French open 2021, she was eliminated in the second round.
