Although the year is not over, the curtains have fallen over the tennis season. With the end of the 2021 ATP Finals, the tennis season for 2021 has reached its conclusion. Germany’s Alexander Zverev was the man of the moment when he lifted his second ATP Finals trophy at the year-end championships held in Turin, Italy.
Alexander Zverev picked up the 19th title of his career, and the 6th title of the year, on Sunday. The 2018’s champion bested world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and went on to defeat world no. 2, Daniil Medvedev, in the finale. In so doing, he became the 4th man behind Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, and Andre Agassi to beat the top 2 players in order to lift the prestigious trophy. His win at Italy gained Zverev 1500 points, with which, he ends the year with a career-high rank of no. 3 in the world.
Year end ATP Rankings, Novak Djokovic’s dream run in 2021
Novak Djokovic has finished as the world no. 1 for a record 7th time. He sealed his Numero Uno position at the Paris Masters tournament, which he went on to win. He has won 5 titles this year, which include three grand slams. Daniil Medvedev is the world no. 2. The Russian was a finalist at the Australian Open, where he lost to Djokovic. He exacted revenge by defeating the Serb at Flushing Meadows, and lifted the first grand slam title of his career.
Alexander Zverev has a 100% record in tournaments finales. He reached 6 finals this year, winning all of them. These include 2 wins at ATP 500 tournament, 2 at ATP 1000 tournament, the Olympic Gold Medal, and the ATP Finals. 23-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas had to withdraw from the ATP Finals due to injuries. Having been ranked no. 3 earlier this year, the Greek has been demoted to 4th place.
In the 5th position sits Andy Rublev. He helped his country win the ATP Cup at the start of the year. Then, he made it to the finals of two Masters 1000 tournaments. He also won the gold in the mixed doubles category at the Tokyo Olympics. Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, and Jannik Sinner are the subsequent names on the ATP Top 10 list.
