The fourth edition of the Laver Cup is just a few days away from kicking-off in Boston. The prestigious event will once again see Team Europe taking on Team World from September 24- September 26.
Unfortunately, the tournament got cancelled in 2020, due to the rise in Covid-19 cases. Team Europe have won the previous three editions and there will be enormous pressure on Team World to get one back, in their own backyard.
Although Team Europe will start as the favourites to win the title for the fourth successive time, they will surely miss the services of tennis icons Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. While the Swiss maestro and Spanish superstar are recovering from their respective injuries, the World No.1 is currently taking a well-deserved break, after a gruelling season.
Interestingly, this will be the first time that Team Europe will take court without Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. That said, the 40-year-old sounded confident of his group and billed Team Europe as the favourites.
“I think Team Europe will be again the favourites, and I think having Alexander Zverev as Olympic champion and Daniil Medvedev as the US Open champion on the team, it’s going to be really good for us, especially for the singles,” Federer said in an interview with Mercedes-Benz.
Like always, Team Europe will be coached by the legendary Bjorn Borg. Amazingly, even without the big-three, they will still six players in the side, who are currently in Top-10 of the ATP rankings.
List of players who will be representing Team Europe in Boston
Daniil Medvedev: The newly crowned US Open champion will be leading the challenge of Team Europe in this edition. The World No.2 is oozing with confidence after upsetting the World No.1 in New York and will be the biggest threat for Team World.
Stefanos Tsitsipas: Although the World No.3 hasn’t been enjoying his time on the ATP tour, he will be one of the stars in this competition. It will be interesting to see how the Greek and Russian handle their awkward moments.
Alexander Zverev: The World No.4 arguably has been experiencing his best time on the hard courts, this season. After his stellar run in Tokyo, Cincinnati and New York, the German too will bring tremendous depth to his side.
Andrey Rublev: The big-hitting Russian is going to be an asset for Team Europe going ahead. Although Rublev can blow hot and cold, he has all the ammunitions to perhaps be the surprise package in Boston.
Matteo Berrettini: Wimbledon finalist Berrettini will bring his firepower on the table and can be a useful pick, especially with his booming serve. It will be interesting to see if the Italian gets to open proceedings in Boston.
Casper Ruud: He is perhaps the surprise pick at this year’s Laver Cup. Nonetheless, this Norway player has been brilliant on the clay this season and over the past few months has also been making few strides on the hard courts. Will be interesting to see what capacity he will fit in.
