‘Let’s hope we get another chance to see Roger Federer at Wimbledon’: Jim Courier
Roger Federer
World No.8 Roger Federer was stunned in the quarterfinals at 2021 Wimbledon a few days ago by Polish player Hubert Hurkacz. The Swiss maestro was also bageled in the final set, which further made his exit very disappointing.
Interestingly, it was the first time Federer ever lost a set 6-0 at Wimbledon. Before the Championships, King of Clay Rafael Nadal had served a bagel to the 39-year-old at the 2008 French Open finals.
While many experts didn’t believe that the 20-time Grand Slam champion would go onto win his ninth Wimbledon title, his rough exit at the hands of Hurkacz left many wondering whether Federer would ever go onto win another Grand Slam. In fact, many experts and fans are also unsure about him returning to play at the SW19 in 2022.
“My goal for the last year was to try to play another Wimbledon,” Federer said, adding he would have talks with his team in the coming days. “I’m actually very happy I made it as far as I did here and was able to play Wimbledon at the level that I did after everything I went through. I would like to play it again but at my age, you’re just never sure what’s around the corner,” the Swiss reasoned.
‘Is this the last we have seen of Roger Federer at Wimbledon? Let’s hope not’: Jim Courier
Meanwhile, former two-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier also expressed his concern on Federer’s situation. “Is this the last we have seen of Roger Federer at Wimbledon? Let’s hope not. Hate to see him play his last set on centre court and get bageled, but let’s not take anything away from Hubert Hurkacz. He played phenomenal tennis. Though he would get nervous but no, he held strong and was very steady and the better player on the court.”
“Let’s hope we get another chance to see Roger Federer at Wimbledon,” the American concluded.
Currently, it has been reported that Federer is back in Switzerland and will make a decision on whether to play the upcoming Tokyo games or not in the coming days.
