Muguruza won the WTA Dubai championship after beginning the season with three event finals on hard courts. Things were looking well for the former Wimbledon and French Open champion, but a third-round loss in Miami and a left knee injury in Charleston changed everything. Muguruza subsequently lost in the third round to Elina Svitolina in Rome, but more importantly, she was stunned in the first round at Roland-Garros, falling to Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-4.
Ferro’s record isn’t one she’d want to have as she has lost all four matches she has played in the main draws of grass court events. One of those matches occurred earlier this season at the Birmingham Open, when she was defeated by countrywoman Kristina Mladenovic, and was followed by a qualifying round at Eastbourne last week, where Ferro was defeated by Vera Zvonareva — this time in straight sets.
Unfortunately for her, she wasn’t as consistent on clay, and the transition to grass has been even more difficult. As a result, despite Muguruza’s lack of fitness, it appears tough for Ferro to gain an edge.
