German player Alexander Zverev is considered to be one of the strongest next-gen players. He is the only active player apart from the Big 4 to win five Masters1000 titles and was also the champion at the 2021 ATP Finals. But he has been on the sidelines since his injury during the semifinals against eventual winner Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open. He posted a warm message for his compatriot Sebastian Vettel, who retired from the world of racing.
The match was heading to a tiebreaker in the second set when Zverev twisted his leg and went down screaming in pain. He withdrew from the championship as he walked out of the court, limping on crutches at 3 hours and 13 minutes into the game. After a further detailed investigation, he underwent surgery that kept him out of action for months due to his recovery. He was supposed to make a comeback at the US Open but another injury pushed his plans with fewer chances of returning in 2022.
Vettel is one of the legends in Formula One racing who concluded his career after 16 seasons, four world championships, and 122 podium finishes, including 53 victories. He raced for the last time at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Zverev reshared the post on the official page of Formula One.
The official page shared a quote from his farewell speech, where Vettel expressed his gratitude to everyone for their support throughout his journey. The quote was like “Thank you for your support, the words, the letters, and all the love“. The German player posted a story on his Instagram account where he said that he will be missed. The story by Alexander Zverev was captioned “@sebastianvettel we will miss you“.
Alexander Zverev hasn’t played a single match since his injury at French Open
He had continuously been ranked in the Top 10 from July 2017 to November 2022. He climbed to his career-best ranking of being the World No 2 following his semifinal finish at the French Open. But his injury did not let him play any more matches and was forced to skip the rest of the season.
Despite reaching the 2nd stop in the ATP rankings, he was unavailable on the Tour whereas other players are doing exceptionally well, especially with the young players dominating the tournaments. As a result, for the first time since July 2017, he fell out of the Top 10 rankings. Alexander Zverev dropped 10 places down and ended the year as the 12th-ranked player.
In order to get some practice before the start of 2023, Alexander Zverev has confirmed his participation in the upcoming World Tennis League along with Dominic Thiem, which is scheduled to take place in Dubai from the 19th-24th of December. Thiem and Zverev are together in Team Hawks and could be seen coaching each other as they look to emerge victorious at the event.
