Alexander Zverev has been off to a sensational start in the 2023 ATP Finals, as he beat former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in his first match of the tournament after a thrilling encounter. This is the first time since March 2021 that the Spaniard has lost three matches in a row and this shows that he is currently going through a rough patch.

Alcaraz in fact won the first set of the match but Zverev made a stunning comeback from there to win the match 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4. After the match, the German was questioned about whether the fact that his victory came against Alcaraz made it even more satisfying. Zverev responded by saying that although he respects the Spaniard, it is always satisfying to defeat good players.

I mean, I get along with him well. I have no issues, but obviously, yes, it’s always nice to beat the best players in the world. He’s definitely one of them. It’s special to win on this court again

Zverev and Alcaraz have been drafted into the Red Group alongside Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. This win over Alcaraz puts German in a very pleasant position, as he now ideally needs just one more win to solidify his position in the semifinals, as the top two players from each group qualify for the semifinals.

Alexander Zverev suffered a scary fall during his match against Carlos Alcaraz

During his match against Alcaraz, Zverev slipped at one point and hurt himself. It scared the fans as something similar happened to the German in the 2022 French Open during his semifinal match against Rafael Nadal. It ended his journey in the tournament and he was forced to retire. Fortunately, it was not so serious this time and Zverev just pinched his Achilles a bit.

I didn’t twist my ankle. I just slipped and maybe pinched my achilles a little bit, so it was nervy pain for a while but I don’t think any damage has been done. I hope not. Obviously, we will see when it settles down, but it was nothing compared to Paris

The German is now one of the favorites to qualify for the semifinals from the Red Group and he must focus on his upcoming matches against Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz.
