German tennis player Alexander Zverev has said that he will be supporting Daniil Medvedev in his next match for a change as his chances to qualify for the semifinals of the 2023 ATP Finals now depend on the Russian. Zverev lost to Medvedev in his second match of the tournament and now his qualification to the semis is under threat as Carlos Alcaraz has won more sets than him.

Besides winning his last match against Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev has to pray that Daniil Medvedev also defeats Carlos Alcaraz in his last match of the group stages. That remains the only way he can qualify for the semifinals. Thus, the German jokingly said that on Friday he will be the number one Daniil Medvedev fan.

Alexander Zverev told reporters:

On Friday I will be the number one Daniil Medvedev fan on this planet... It's a change, of course. We'll see what happens. Right now things don't depend on me. Daniil is playing very well. I think he has a good chance of winning. If that happens, I have to be ready & focused to beat Andrey.

Alexander Zverev started off his ATP Finals 2023 campaign with a sensational win against Carlos Alcaraz. Unfortunately, the format of the tournament is such that even a single loss can stop a player from qualifying to the semifinals and the World No. 7 is stuck in such a situation. He will hope that Daniil Medvedev will repeat his performance in the US Open semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.

Alexander Zverev takes on Andrey Rublev in his last group-stage match

Besides keeping an eye on the result of the match between Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev will also have to ensure that he wins his last group-stage match against Andrey Rublev. If he loses against the Russian, Zverev will be out of the competition directly.

The two players have played a total of eight matches against each other and Alexander Zverev is 5-3 up against Andrey Rublev in head-to-head matches. The German will hope to add to this record on Friday.

Moreover, Rublev is in poor form in this tournament. He is already out of the tournament, having lost his matches against Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz.
