Previously ranked No.2 in the world by the WTA, former tennis player, Anett Kontaveit shocked her fans when she announced her retirement plans earlier this year. Recently, the Estonian talked about why she decided as she reflected on her life after retirement from tennis.
A few months back in June, Estonian top seed, Kontaveit, took the tennis world by storm when she announced her retirement on her Instagram handle. She revealed that she’ll be retiring at the age of 27 from the sport of tennis due to a degenerative back condition she was suffering. The 27-year-old played her last match in July, earlier this year at Wimbledon. Kontaveit lost her second-round match to Marie Bouzkova over two sets.
“I’m the kind of person who thinks very long & hard before making any big decisions. I know it was the right decision. I’m 100 % at peace with it,” Kontaveit revealed recently in an appearance she made on the Estonian TV talk show, Hommik Anuga. “Of course, there are more things I could have still achieved, but I know that when I was playing I gave 100 % of myself. I did everything as well as I could, so I know this was the right decision for me,” the former player said.
Discussing her life now that she no longer spends hours on the tennis court, Anett Kontaveit said, “One thing I’m really scared about is how I’m going to cope with all the things that I’ve never had to deal with before, like the routine of being at home, the cold & the long winter”. “My life certainly didn’t end there when I stopped playing tennis. There are so many other opportunities in life,” the 27-year-old said in addition.
Anett Kontaveit’s remarkable rise to the WTA World No.2 ranking
Estonian tennis sensation, Kontaveit ascended to fifth place in the ranking last year following her exploits at the beginning of 2022. She continued her scale to the top of the rankings in the coming weeks. After her final appearance at Qatar against the current World No.2, Iga Swiatek, Kontaveit rose to fourth place.
In Wimbledon last year, the Estonian entered as the second seed but could not move past the second round. Even after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round of the French Open, she reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in June 2022.
After that things started falling apart for her as in the US Open in 2022, she was ousted by the tennis legend Serena Williams in the second round. It completed Kontaveit’s subpar major record in 2022, having never made it past the second round. The 2023 season did not bring her a change in fortune. The player later informed her fans that she had “lumbar disc degeneration” in her back and would be retiring from tennis following the 2023 edition of Wimbledon.
