Carlos Alcaraz suffered an agonizing defeat in his Davis Cup match against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. Aliassime prevailed over the new World No. 1 by beating him, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2. The Canadian star saved 7 break points to level the score between Canada and Spain.

This was Alcaraz‘s first match after achieving the World No.1 ranking. The Spaniard tried to stay in the match but just couldn’t come back to his form. He recently made the news after winning the prestigious US Open title which made him the youngest player in men’s singles to hold the top ranking in ATP.

Carlos Alcaraz became the first World No. 1 to lose his first match at the top of the rankings since Lleyton Hewitt in 2001. The Canadian o the other hand hit 16 aces and maintained his dominance throughout the match. The new World No.1, after his gruelling loss, said, “I think Felix played on a high level and served brutally good. I made mistakes at the end of the second set, which cost me a lot.”

“I was not at my best physically and mentally, but I still tried my best. I was not at my 100% and will try to recover until Sunday. This is the Davis Cup, and you must give everything for your country until the last point.”

Carlos Alcaraz had a tough few games and made an intense backhand error in the ninth game to set the first break for his opponent. Felix Auger Aliassime did not let go of crucial points and made sure to convert those important points. The Canadian hit another brilliant serve to seal the match and equal Canada in the scoreline.
