Childhood coach Rick Macci drops major hint on Venus Williams’s retirement question
Former coach of both Serena and Venus Williams tells when Venus Williams can retire.
Venus Williams and Rick Macci
The childhood coach of Williams sisters Rick Macci has raised the speculations of Venus Williams’s retirement. The elder of the Williams sisters is still active playing and participating in the tournaments. However, after Serena Williams’s retirement after the US Open 2022, media attention is on Venus Williams, when she is going to decide to hang up her boots.
Rick Macci is a seven-time USPTA national coach of the year winner and USPTA Florida Hall of Fame member. But his relationship with the Williams family is special. He taught both the sisters the basics of the sport and helped them to achieve excellence in this sport. Hence, he may have some deep insights about the players. He thinks Venus Williams may decide to retire during the US Open.
“I think it’s difficult for Venus Williams. When I had Venus and Serena, it was more about Venus. Because she was older as you saw in the King Richard movie. Venus was really, really like my daughter and we had an amazing bond,” Mr. Macci said.
“In my opinion, and I don’t have any insight, I think she’ll retire at the US Open. I think that she’ll play doubles with Serena. And I think they’re going to exit the stage left at the US Open. I have no insight. I’m just going on my gut. Because I think with injuries and she hurt her hip in the last tournament, it’s hard with the injuries. And I think she knows she’s not going to win the tournament,” he continued.

Rick Macci thinks that Williams sisters together can still win a tournament
Venus Williams won her first few matches this year. She also got a wildcard entry into the main draw of the Australian Open. However, her injuries bereft her again from this opportunity. She has since then not played any match on the tour.
However, Rick Macci thinks that the Williams sisters together can win a Grand Slam title. He knows that individually Venus Williams cannot put such an extraordinary effort to win the tournament but he is confident that with Serena Williams, the pair can win even an important tournament.
“But obviously if she still plays. It’s good for the name. It’s good for the brand. She has a platform. I get all that stuff, but I think she could still play doubles with Serena, and believe it or not, I think they could still win tournaments,” Mr. Macci said.
“And if she had a good mixed doubles partner, she could do damage, but singles it’s tough. Then if you do win a match, you got to play the next day. So it’s a little, a little tricky. But if she wants to keep playing, that’s totally up to her. But I love VW,” he added.
