Daniil Medvedev suffered a very close defeat to Jannik Sinner in the final of the 2023 China Open. The two players played their best tennis in the final and gave the fans an encounter that will be remembered for ages. Although Sinner won the match in straight sets, both sets were decided in the tiebreak, which goes on to show how great it was. However, despite this defeat, Medvedev is confident that his season is not over yet and is optimistic about ending it with something big.
The Russian felt that he played well in the final and some great tennis was played in the match. “I’m in good shape. Even today, I felt that the match was very good and that there was a great level of tennis,” said the World No. 3 after loss to the Italian ace.
“I had to do better if I wanted to win, but it was a great level. I want to continue playing well this season. It’s not over yet; there are a lot of points I can add. Now it’s time to go to Shanghai, give my best, and hopefully win the title,” he added.
Medvedev will headstart his campaign in the Shanghai Masters directly from the second round, where he will be up against Christian Garin from Chile. The Paris Masters, too, is left to be played in the latter half of October. Thus, Daniil Medvedev has the scope of finishing the season on a great note.
Daniil Medvedev on his chances at the Shanghai Masters
The Russian international is of the opinion that he has a good chance of winning the Shanghai Masters as it is the end of the season and most of the players are already tired by now. Moreover, he has now reached back-to-back finals at the US Open and the China Open. Thus, he has great momentum and wants to make good use of it in the Shanghai Masters.
“I think everyone is a little tired. We are at the end of the season. At the same time, I know for sure that when I am in this form, reaching the finals, and playing well, it is better not to lose this momentum,“ Medvedev said.
About his immediate goal, he said, “I will go to Shanghai and I will try to do my best. I think the balls are different; I don’t know if the courts will be different, but I will need time to adapt. I haven’t seen the draw yet.”
