Emma Raducanu continues to reap laurels for her 2021 US Open campaign. Ranked 150th in the world, Raducanu reached the main draw after winning the three qualifying rounds in straight sets. She continued her form as she went on to win the title at Flushing Meadows not dropping a single set in 10 matches to end Britain’s draught of a female Grand Slam champion.

Virginia Wade was the last female Briton to win a Grand Slam when she won the 1977 Wimbledon. Wade was in attendance when Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez in the finals to win her first-ever Grand Slam title at the age of 18. The win also made her first-ever player, male or female, in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title as a qualifier.

As a result of her win, Raducanu became the new World No. 23 making a jump of 127 places from the start of her campaign. As she became a hero in a space of two weeks, her rising popularity and historic achievement saw her being appointed as a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 New Year Honors by then-British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Raducanu finally received her MBE badge at a ceremony organized at Windsor Castle where she was honored by the current British monarch, King Charles III. Donning a black outfit with a black hat, Raducanu later posed with the MBE lapel pin becoming one of the youngest-ever recipients of the prestigious award in the UK.

Raducanu‘s high in the 2021 season was quickly brought down by injuries and poor performances in the 2022 season. Playing in her first-ever full season, Raducanu’s start to the season was affected due to her bout with Covid-19 during the 2021 Christmas.

Upon recovering, other physical issues caught up with the teenager with blisters on her palms and back issues affecting her at regular intervals. Her controversial decision-making in keeping a coach for a long time also contributed to inconsistency in her results as she ended the season without a single qualification in the finals.

Despite being in the Top 10 at one point, she ends the season ranked 75th in the world. Raducanu will soon be however making a return to action as she is confirmed to be part of the 2022 Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. She will take on World No. 2 Ons Jabeur at the event as per schedule.
