Former Liverpool midfielder believes Emma Raducanu is not worthy of becoming an MBE

Emma Raducanu became a source of inspiration for thousands of young girls and teenagers out there when she became the US Open champion in 2021. She also became the first champion to have come straight from the qualifiers.
That’s not all, her emphatic win got her a name in the 2022 New Year Honour List. She was named by the late Queen Elizabeth II herself. On 30th November, she received her Member of the British Empire (MBE) honor from King Charles III. The prestigious order is given to a person who has made excellent contributions in the field of science, arts, public service, or the military.
Emma Raducanu took to social media to share her excitement and rejoice.
“AM MBE, PM NTC. It’s been great to receive my honour today from His Majesty the King – I feel extremely grateful,” she wrote.
But former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy thinks that she has not done enough to be given such an honorific title.
“I find it bizarre that someone would get an award for doing their job, and even if you do it very well. If you did get an award where you did give services to a sport and then afterwards you’ve finished and you used that platform to help others,” he said in an interview with a sports channel as reported by the British daily The Express.
He cited the example of former Liverpool manager Sir Kenny Daglish to prove his point.
“Kenny Daglish is a great example of somebody that didn’t just become a manager of Liverpool, he integrated himself. Especially after Hillsborough, the things he did, the hospital he built through him and his wife,” he added.
Emma Raducanu may have had a tough year on the court but she did receive many accolades off-court.
Emma Raducanu needs to perform well in the upcoming season
Emma Raducanu finished her first but long, full WTA season this year as she saw some extremely tough times this year. The amount of hype and expectations that she gathered after winning the 2021 US Open, fizzled out this year.
However, she earned millions of pounds in the period between May 2021 and 2022. In a news report, it was discovered that she made £22.8 million during this time. She also became the third highest-paid female athlete after 4-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.
This happened with the help of many brands which she endorses. The endorsements filled her treasury. However, her monetary success can only continue if she performs well on the court. She also needs to be more visible as constant injury worries have made it difficult for her to perform at peak level in the tournaments.
