L-Casper Ruud, R-Holger Rune

Casper Ruud and Holger Rune are all set to clash in the quarterfinals of the 2023 French Open. This promises to be a fascinating encounter, as there is nothing much to separate the two players. Both players have had their fair share of challenges during the course of the French Open, as Holger Rune emerged victorious in a monumental four-set battle in the fourth round.

The two players are extremely well-suited to playing on clay courts, which makes this matchup even more interesting. Rune came into this tournament on the back of a final run at the 2023 Italian Open. Meanwhile, after winning the Estoril Open title a couple of months ago, Ruud has underperformed a bit during the past couple of tournaments.

Casper Ruud vs Holger Rune: Preview

Casper Ruud defeated Nicolas Jarry in the fourth round of the 2023 French Open in straight sets. However, the Norwegian had to really dig deep in all three sets to claim the victory. The fourth seed has dropped a set each in his second and third-round victories. He defeated Elias Ymer in straight sets in the first set. Ruud reached the finals of the French Open last year and will be eager to take a step further and claim the title.

Holger Rune and Casper Ruud have locked horns against each other on five occasions in the past. The latter has a superior record over the Dane, winning four of their five encounters. The duo clashed on the same stage last year, in the quarterfinals of the French Open. Ruud progressed into the semifinals with a straight sets victory.

Holger Rune escaped a huge scare in the fourth round, as he saw off Francisco Cerundolo in an epic-five set encounter. The Dane held his nerve in the final set tiebreaker to progress further into the last eight. Rune defeated Christopher Eubanks in the opening round in four sets, as he received a bye in the second round. The sixth seed outplayed Genaro Alberto Olivieri in the third round in straight sets. The youngster has had an impressive clay court season so far, ending as the runner-up in Monte Carlo and Rome, whilst claiming the title in Munich.

This match promises to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, as both players have a fair chance of reaching the last four. Holger Rune will be understandably feeling a bit exhausted, given his marathon encounter in the fourth round. The Dane has a tendency of crumbling a bit under pressure, something which Casper Ruud can perfectly exploit. Their last meeting ended in a three-set victory over Rune, who will hold the mental edge over his opponent.

Prediction: Casper Ruud to win in five sets
