Holger Rune crashed out of the French Open once again in the quarterfinals. And once again at the hands of fellow Scandinavian Casper Ruud. The match completely fell short of anyone’s expectations, as the match was highly anticipated. There was a lot of hype around an all-Scandinavian clash as they headed to their sixth matchup. Ruud had bested Holger four out of five times, giving him great odds.

However, the 20-year-old Holger Rune was coming into the match with immense confidence. His previous round 5 setters win against Francis Cerundolo prepared him well for this quarterfinal.

Mats Wilander spoke after the quarterfinal with Eurosport. He felt that the Dane completely succumbed to the pressure and the hype of the match. Wilander felt that Rune has a challenge with completely committing to a match.

He feels that Rune usually has a hard time finding inspiration to excel while on the court. Wilander said that “I think he needs mayhem; he needs a little bit of that Nick Kyrgios, and he didn’t have that.” Nick Kyrgios, on the other hand, who is an admirer of Holger Rune, recently posted on Twitter that he is thinking of coaching tennis players. Perhaps Holger Rune will be willing.

Wilander felt that Rune did have a lot of energy during the match but was not channeled in the right manner. The young Rune is usually fired up but he loses his main focus which is to win the match. For the Ruud and Rune match, Wilander said, “He was flat and I think it’s a learning lesson for him. But again I don’t know if he has the energy to be because he’s so fired up in a way – but not with his tennis racquet in his hand.”

Both the young Dane and the Australian are fans of each other. They respect each other a lot and have many times expressed their desire to play against each other in a match. Their wish seems to have come true. Holger Rune and Nick Kyrgios were supposed to meet on a tennis court this year, but it didn’t happen. Both players were to try and test each other in an exhibition match, ‘Energi Danmark Champions Battle,’ to be held on May 24th. But this got canceled because the Australian had a bad foot injury.

Nick Kyrgios loves Holger Rune and his attitude. He once made an open offer to the young Dane to become his coach. Similar to Kyrgios, the young Dane has been embroiled in many controversies early in his career.

Kyrgios turned out to be an appreciated mentor and friend for the Dane when he was still a newcomer in the sport. In one older incident, Kyrgios gave Rune tactical advice while they were both competing on the ITF tour. Rune, in return for that favor, described the Australian as a “hell of a player” and said the two had had a terrific friendship ever since.

Nick Kyrgios always supports Holger Rune when the whole world is busy blaming the young Dane for his misadventures on the court. He even supported the Dane against the stalwart of tennis, Stan Wawrinka, when the Dane and Swiss had a verbal spat in one of their meetups. It would be great to see the two get together, form a team, and bring back Nick Kyrgios magic.
