2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep won her 12th consecutive match at the All England Club by beating American Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals in straight sets 6-2,6-4. Halep didn’t play the 2021 Wimbledon Championships due to injury and hence wasn’t able to defend the title she won in 2019. But now, with the way in which the women’s draw has turned up, she looks like the favorite to win the title.

Halep has struggled a lot with form ever since her return and her new partnership with coach Patrick Mouratoglou didn’t start well either. She was knocked out in the second round at French Open but started her grass season with a semifinal outing at the Birmingham Classic and also reached the semifinal at the Bad Homburg Open.

This week at Wimbledon, Halep is yet to drop a set. After her victory, she said that it is great to be in the semifinals once again and revealed how emotional she was on this occasion. She admitted that Anisimova had much stronger hands and was crushing the ball but using all her years of experience, Halep relied on her legs and outplayed her in movement.

“It is great to be back in the semi-finals,” Halep said after reaching the semifinals. “I am very emotional right now – it means a lot. I played a tough opponent today, she can crush the ball and I didn’t know what to do. But I believed in myself, and I had to stay there strong on my legs – they helped me today.”

She then said that she struggled a lot last year and is still trying to build that confidence back and currently, it looks like she is heading in a positive direction. Halep also lauded the crowd for giving her lots of energy.

“I struggled a lot last year and I am just trying to build my confidence back. I am starting to do that and it is good. The crowd gives me a lot of energy,” she said.
