“I just never thought that I would be in the semi-finals at a Grand Slam,” Nick Kyrgios gets emotional after reaching maiden grand slam semifinal
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios’ fairytale, yet much-deserved run at Wimbledon 2022 continues as he defeats Cristian Garin in the quarterfinals in straight sets 6-4,6-3,7-6(5) to reach his maiden grand slam semifinals. Kyrgios had previously reached the quarterfinals of a major 3 times but never managed to get beyond it. And uncharacteristically, after the match, he was emotional.
Much was expected from Kyrgios ahead of Wimbledon given his recent form and the Australian hasn’t disappointed just yet. He stunned 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round and got past an inspired Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round in five sets before beating Garin to reach the semis. Kyrgios took a moment after the match was just sat on the chair for a couple of minutes to soak it all in. It was hard for him to believe what he had achieved which he later acknowledged in the on-court interview.
Kyrgios straight away addressed the crowd for their energy and showcased his emotions by revealing his astonishment. He had thought that he’d never reach the semifinals at a major and doing so is just out of this world. He expressed how proud he was after having thought that he had missed his chances during the initial half of his career.
“An amazing atmosphere out here again. I just never thought that I would be in the semi-finals at a Grand Slam. I thought that ship had sailed,” Kyrgios said in his on-court interview. “I didn’t go about things great earlier in my career and may have missed my window. I am really proud of the way I have come back out here.”

He joked that each and every member of his current team play a very vital role in his success and he wouldn’t want to put any coach through the trouble of handling him. He added that no one knows his tennis better than himself.
“Each and every one of my teams play an important role,” Kyrgios said. “No one knows my tennis better than I do. To be in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, I am pretty happy.”
